Chartered Hurricane was a NWOBHM duo consisting of Phil and Mark Jones that gigged consistently and built up a large following in the Newport Gwent area of Wales in the early 80's. The band formed in 1981 and released this one very scarce single (originally housed in a stamped sleeve) in 1983. The A side "Cathy Come Home" is a totally great one part pop song While the B side "All Smashed Up" is more appealing to NWOBHM collector types. The band eventually grew from a duo to a five piece adding Mike Ward on bass, Terry (TNT) Thomas on drums and Robert Millar on guitar. After several failed attempts to break it big in London they split in 1984.
Fantastic. Loved it then, love it now. I wish it was 1982 not 1983!

Phil Jones continued in a new band called 'S.E.X.' with Terry (TNT) Thomas and added Paul Coghill and Wynne Jenkins on guitar and Adrian Bamford on bass. Through many line up changes (Phil remaining the constant), 'S.E.X.' continue gigging to this day (see their MySpace site under 'Sexwelshrock') and have become Welsh legends. All their albums, there are 8 to date, are about to see a long overdue re-release on (factory-pressed) CD.

ReplyDeleteMembers were Phil Jones Lead vocals, Mark Jones, dual Lead guitar, Rob Millar, dual Lead guitar, Philip Mitch Mitchinson, Bass and Terry thomas Drums.
The band were formed in Porthcawl South Wales and Gigged all over South Wales.
Phil is still in a band called SEX and Mark has a couple of projects, the main one being The Guzzards catch the live and enjoy.
